Athena A. Drewes, PsyD, MA, MS Ed, RPT-S, is a licensed psychologist, certified school psychologist, and registered play therapist supervisor. She is a noted author and co-editor of over 16 books on play therapy including The Therapeutic Powers of Play: 20 Core Agents of Change and Supervision Can be Playful. Second Edition. The American Psychological Association Children and Adolescents Series IX has a demonstration DVD of her Prescriptive Integrative Play Therapy. She has a long and prestigious career with over 50 years of clinical experience in working with children and adolescents with complex trauma and sexual abuse in schools, residential treatment, and foster care settings. She was Founder and President of the New York Association for Play Therapy (NYAPT), served as Director of the Association for Play Therapy (APT) and has served, and continues to serve, in leadership roles on many APT committees. She was awarded the honorary status of Founder and President Emeritus of NYAPT and received Lifetime Achievement Awards from NYAPT and the national Association for Play Therapy. Dr. Drewes introduced, promotes and trains on Integrative Play Therapy, especially the blending of play therapy with cognitive behavioral therapy. She is currently lives in Ocala, Florida and has a private practice focusing on supervision, consultation and training on the national and international level.
